The Wahine was a ferry that had left from the south island and
was caught in a storm that left them off course they ended up crashing into the Barrett reef

Jean batten flew from south america in her Gull low winged plane with two extra petrol tanks she flew night and day only stopping in europe to refill and then continuing on her way to sydney by herself and waited there until the weather over the Tasman sea improved until continuing on her way to new zealand.
